Horse Books for Horse Lovers | Books About Horses for Kids & Other Horse Resources
I’ve kind of put writing on the back burner in our homeschooling. We’ve done handwriting… and that’s basically it. Well, she’s written sentences here and there in Five in a Row but we haven’t done any hardcore writing. I’ve had this idea to create a book about their favorite animal. The books have been sitting on my shelf but I don’t think I’ve had the mental capacity to organize the project until now.
Horses have always been my daughter’s favorite animal because they are the closest thing to a unicorn. Unicorns are her true favorite animal but horses are cool too. I’ve gathered all the resources we used during our research process on horses. If you have a horse lover too, I’m sure they would enjoy these tools to learn more about horses!
HORSE BOOKS FOR CHILDREN:
We checked out a lot of books about horses for our animal research project. These were the ones where we were able to gather the most information. These books need to be read to young children, however, you can gather tons of information by looking at the pictures which is mostly what we did.
Horses and Ponies by Anna Milbourne: This book explains the basics of horses. It tells what a horse looks like, how to care for horses, what a horses life is like, riding lessons etc.

The Horse by Emanuela Bussalati: This is a board book I found at a thrift store. This book explains horses in very simple language. It gives very simple knowledge about horses.

The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses by Paul Goble: This book is one of my personal favorites. The pictures are stunning. It’s an American Indian folktale of a girl who loves to be with the wild horses. She falls asleep and is awoken by a storm. She gets carried away with the horses, lost from her family. She is eventually found and becomes deeply sad when she is separated from her wild horses. Her family decides it is best for her to go back with the wild horses where it is said she became one herself.

OTHER RESOURCES ABOUT HORSES:
In addition to reading books and looking at pictures, we did some exploring on the internet! I vetted these sites before I allowed my kids to see them and I made sure to facilitate while they were watching and/or browsing them. Since the websites are an advanced reading level for young children I did have to read the site information so it was easy to monitor anyways.
I added several websites to a Google Doc and then attached it as an assignment in Google Classroom. It’s easier to do it this way so that links don’t get lost and they are easily accessible. We gathered lots of information about horses from:
Science Kids Animal Facts: Fun Horse Facts For Kids
Horse Rookie: 99 Fun & Incredible Horse Facts for Kids
We also enjoyed watching the documentary Equus: Story of the Horse. The full episodes are no longer on PBS but they do have clips from the documentary. I was able to find the episodes on DailyMotion. It does run ads so beware. I watched it with my kids. The ads were insurance and car commercials on repeat. The documentary was pretty amazing though.
If you used any of these resources, which one was your favorite? Write it in the comments below. We really enjoyed the documentary and browsing the pictures in books!
