Photo Log: My Trip to Copenhagen, Denmark
My cousin’s husband asked what my aunt and I thought of the “hot Danish guys”. You know, the guys with the blue eyes and chiseled jaw he said. I looked at my aunt and we laughed. Where they at? 👀 I hadn’t seen any yet.
I wasn’t looking for any hot guys anyways. I have a hot guy at home.
What was hot was sitting in an airplane for an hour with no air conditioning.
After I flew nine direct hours to Frankfurt, Germany, I sat for four hours on a layover. Then another two hours because there were issues with the connecting flight. The plane was over heated from sitting on the tarmac all day and the air conditioning wasn’t working, even with additional support from the maintenance crew. Then the weather changed and we had to wait even longer for it to pass.
Eventually I got to Denmark. My aunt, cousin, and her husband picked me up and we ate McDonald’s at midnight. I slept so hard that night. The next day, the adventures began!
Nyhavn
After we went on a decent boat tour around the canals, my aunt and I sat at a cute Irish pub-like restaurant. Our table was crammed right next to another couple. We basically had lunch with them. My hair kept getting stuck in the plant sitting behind me. I ordered chicken tenders (weird, right?) and a Carlsberg. My goodness, those chicken tenders! They were so delicious. Our server took a million years to bring us the bill. Which they never really did after asking four different employees for the check. I basically begged them to let me pay on my way out while my aunt was already walking back to the car.
Strøget
Just around the corner this street gets too bougie for me. Cartier was gated. Prada, Hermes (pronounced her-mez, not hermes like the greek god… who knew 🤷🏻♀️) and Burberry were all there too. It opens to a square where we were distracted by the free cathedral entrance which led us to the palace museum tour that consumed the rest of our afternoon.
Little Mermaid Statue
Aaahh-aahh-aah, aaahh-aahh-aah! She looks quite sad. The story goes she comes to the shore every morning and night hoping to see her prince. She eventually turns into sea foam. The Little Mermaid statue is one of the most popular attractions in the world.
The Botanical Garden / Palm House
The Botanical Garden Pond
Butterfly House
By the time we found the entrance to this place, we were drenched in rain! We could see the greenhouse between the gates and trees but the entrance was hidden on a secret corner. Apparently they were under construction so there was only one entrance to the gardens.
The glass greenhouse is so beautiful. It’s divided into several sections. You walk straight through. Open the door on the other side and you’re in another area. The middle has a spiral staircase you can climb to the top and walk around the circumference.
Down below is where the butterflies live. The butterflies really took to my aunt. There was a blue butterfly in particular that seemed to follow her through the entire butterfly conservatory.
When we left, we decided to turn left instead of right. We thought we were parked closer to the entrance from the other direction. We walked down the street and went left again. Looked down the road, said “This doesn’t look familiar.” So we went back to the entrance and walked the way we came. Turns out we walked in a giant circle and our car was just across the street from where we were standing the first time. Note to self: Look right AND left on the street you parked so you have a visual reminder from all directions.
Mikkeller
Bottoms up baby! The Hygge vibes in this brewery were on point. The lighting was dim. There were candles everywhere. It was located in a cellar or basement type space. Super cozy. The beer was good. I drank a light beer. A pilsner maybe. Or maybe it was a pale ale. I don’t remember but we had to leave because my cousin left her phone at a restaurant so we had to hurry before the restaurant closed.
Assistens Cemetery
The final resting place of Hans Christian Andersen, the author of the original The Little Mermaid and many other popular fairy tales. He once shared his space with a friend but the friend’s family had some drama so the friend was removed from this site and placed with his family members at another site.
Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli Amusement Park
Tivoli is the world’s oldest amusement park. We watched an interesting mime show. Interesting not in a good way. Some weird things were going on and I couldn’t follow the story line. There is a ride here inspired my Hans Christian Anderson’s stories and it is absolutely adorable. Except for the wax Hans at the very end that looks way too freaky.
The gardens are stunning. And there are restaurants sprinkled throughout. We stopped at a restaurant along the pond where I had a caesar salad. It was all right. I was not impressed by the food in Denmark.
Swan Boats
We woke up entirely too early. We started the day at 6 a.m. By 8 a.m. we were driving in the vicinity of the swan boats. My aunt was not a happy camper. The GPS kept taking us back to the same road that was closed. We crossed over the water multiple times. Drove in the bus lane. Drove down the road in the wrong direction. And cut off the bike lanes. By 9:30 a.m. we finally found parking.
After we got our smoothies, hopped into the swan boat, and paddled around for a while, it started to rain. It was a light sprinkle that looked like it was going to pass quickly. It didn’t. It turned into an absolute down pour. My b Aunt Cathy. “Paddle Lindsy, paddle.” She couldn’t get out of there fast enough and I was dying laughing.
Holm Café
Aside from the Hygge vibe, the only other thing Denmark is known for is their pastries. Which is weird because they were extremely hard to find. I was on a mission to find a local pastry shop. We asked a local and he guided us to this gem, Holm. I had a cardamom something and oh em gee… so good.
My trip was so fun! I’m still talking about it like it just happened. I truly felt like these were my people with the way they dressed and their outlook on the meaning of life. Until next time Denmark. ✌🏻
