Our Kindergarten Homeschool Schedule

I thrive on structure but I also like the freedom to choose or to be creative. So our schedule has structure but it also gives me the freedom to do things when I want. I don’t like to be too confined to a time because when I can’t meet the expectation, I feel discouraged and stressed that I am running behind. I give us a chunk of time to get things done and within that chunk of time it doesn’t matter what order or how long it takes to finish.

We start school sometime between 10am and 11am. We end school sometime between 1pm and 2pm. During this time we do all sorts of activities. A typical day looks something like this:

Reading lesson (20-30 mins)

Math lesson  (20-30 mins) + iReady (15 mins)

Lunch

Read aloud (15-20 mins)

Calendar (10 mins)

Twice a week we do handwriting. That takes about 10 minutes max. Fridays we try to alternate poetry tea time, nature journaling, and stem activities. Once a week we do a picture study which takes about 10 minutes. Currently we are observing Vincent Van Gogh. Once a week we are also doing science. We are learning about the moon. Science can be about 20 to 30 minutes. A typical week would look something like this:

In Kindergarten, I think kids should still have lots of time to play. I do not feel the need to spend hours upon hours doing schoolwork. Some of why we start later in the day is because my girls like to play in the morning and when they are playing well, I don’t like to interrupt. Plus I am a slow morning person so I take advantage of their playing and take my time. I do not like to rush and it takes my face forever to wake up. 😁
