Five in a Row: Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans

Madeline goes on adventures through Pah-ree (Paris but said the french way)! Madeline is the smallest of twelve little girls. She is the most daring, brave, and bold little girl. One day she gets rushed to the hospital to get her appendix out! All the other girls get jelly after they see the get well gifts Madeline receives. However, Miss Clavel reminds them that it is better to have good health than not.

Day 1

Social Studies: Geography

We watched a video about Paris and the impacts of the Seine River on the city. The Seine River reminded the girls of Ping and the Yangtze River! We found Paris, France on our globe and then colored a fact sheet about France.

Day 2

Social Studies: Human Relationships

We did a mixed media art project of the vase and flowers the girls and Miss Clavel brought for Madeline in the hospital. We discussed many ways to cheer someone up or help them when they are ill. Some of their suggestions were to draw them a picture

do their dishes

make them food

give them a hug and a kiss

sweep the floor

and bring them flowers.

Day 3

Art: Architecture

I had the girls use scrape painting for the background. The background is actually a neon yellow color—like a yellow high lighter. I ruined two of my black Micron markers by not waiting for the paper to completely dry. We switched to sharpies. Though slightly better, it still would have been best to wait for the paper to completely dry. I used white construction paper and taped it down with painters tape. Not ideal, as it tore up the paper when I took the tape off. Water color paper probably would have been better. I like the white border though. Epic fail? Not completely. I learned what not to do next time.

We looked at pictures of the real buildings from Madeline. We talked about how they don’t look exactly the same as the photo because the illustrations are how the artist views the building. Violet chose to draw the Eiffel Tower and Emme drew the Notre Dame church.

Day 4

Science: Human Body - Appendix

We learned that the appendix is found on our lower right side. We looked at some diagrams and located where it was on our bodies. I found directions for drawing Madeline. I folded printer paper into fourths. The girls drew Madeline and labeled her appendix. Then they drew Madeline doing other activities.
